Mattress Buying Guide

Sleep is vital to your health and well-being.  Your body needs a good night's sleep in order to re-energize and prepare for the day ahead.  Poor sleep can have negative effects on memory, cognitive skills, digestion and many other aspects of your life.  The wrong mattress - one that is worn out or poorly suited to your needs - can cause you to toss and turn, and lose valuable sleep. Sleeping on the right mattress - one that is well suited to your needs for comfort, support and space - can help you sleep better.

How To Tell If You Need A New Mattress

Sometimes it is obvious that your old mattress has seen better days; sagging, creaking, worn ticking and protruding coils are good signs it is time for a new mattress. But sometimes it isn't quite so obvious. How do you know if your mattress is robbing you of sleep?  Well, try answering these simple questions:

  • Do you wake up with stiffness, numbness, or aches and pains?
  • Are you not sleeping as well now as you were a year ago?
  • Have you had your best night's sleep somewhere other than your own bed?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, a new mattress may help you sleep better.

Whether you want to shop by comfort or shop by size.  We can help guide you to meet your need for freedom of movement and space.

Shop By Comfort

What Type of Sleeper Are You?

Firm Sleep on stomach Enjoy a mattress without too much “give”
Plush Sleep on side or back Like some cushion, but not too much
Ultra-Plush Sleep on back Love extra layers of softness and comfort

Purchasing Power offers Firm and Euro Pilowtop Plush mattresses.

Pillow top mattresses are among the most popular designs available today and they offer an extra layer of cushioning above the traditional mattress surface.  There are a lot of luxury materials now being used in mattress construction, including everything from natural fibers like cotton and wool to newer technologies such as foams that mold to the body.

Most mattresses have an innerspring unit that is made of metal coils. The number of coils in a mattress corresponds to how much support a mattress will provide.  The higher number of coils, the greater the support and the more firm a mattress may feel.  A mattress with a lower coil count may not be a choice if you prefer less support.

Shop By Size

According to The Better Sleep Council, the most common regret after purchasing a mattress is not purchasing a larger mattress. Therefore, consideration of size is very important.  View the chart below to help guide you in your selection.  Purchasing Power offers Full (Double) and Queen sizes.

Care Tips

It is very important to follow mattress care instructions to get the most out of your new mattress.  Below are some basic care tips:

Proper Installation
If you choose to transport and install your sleep set on your own, be sure to check measurements and carefully review all installation instructions.
Rotate It Rotate mattress from end-to-end every 2 weeks for the first 3 months and then once every 6 months.
Use A Protective Pad In order to keep your mattress fresh and free from stains, use a quality, washable mattress pad.
Let It Breathe If you detect any odors from your new mattresses, allow the mattress to “air out”.  Most odors will dissipate within a week.
Give It Good Support Use a sturdy, high quality bed frame.  If your new sleep set is queen or king, center support(s) will be required to keep the mattress from bowing or breaking.
Don’t Dry Clean Vacuuming is the only recommended cleaning method.  Do not ever soak a mattress or foundation.
Don’t Remove The Tag Information on the label will assist in identification should you have a warranty claim in the future.
Save Original Receipts And Warranty Papers Keep the original sales receipt and warranty information for any future use.
It’s Not A Trampoline Do not let children jump on your new sleep set.  This could do damage to the interior construction.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is included in my purchase? Your purchase will include a strong, metal bed frame, foundation (also known as box spring), and mattress.

  2. Why must I buy a complete set when my box spring looks fine? In many cases, the main reason for a mattress wearing out is a bad box spring.  To ensure that the maximum support and comfort is obtained from the new bed, the mattress and foundation sets are designed to work together as a unit.

  3. Why should I buy a new frame? It is important to have a strong, metal frame with proper center support for the mattress to perform and feel right. Today’s mattress sets are much thicker and heavier than in the past and require stronger frames. An inadequate frame may cause improper support and premature wear-out.

  4. What is the warranty and return policy? Purchasing Power does not accept returns or offer comfort guarantee.

  5. If I have a manufacturer’s warranty, will the whole set be replaced if I have a problem? No, in cases where only the mattress or box spring has been determined to have a manufacturing defect, only the defective piece will be repaired or replaced.  Sears will replace the piece with a cover of equal or greater value. This action will not impact serviceability of the product or future warranty claims.

  6. Why does my new mattress have a strange odor? This is normal because when a mattress is manufactured, it is instantly sealed in an air tight bag.  Do not place linens on the bed and allow the mattress to “breathe” for up to one week.
