Level 3 Invites Global Audience to the Democratic

National Convention

When this month’s Democratic National Convention kicks off in Denver on Aug. 25, 2008, millions will follow as the events unfold online via live, streaming video. Visitors to www.demconvention.com will hold a virtual “all access pass” to the convention, taking it beyond the physical walls of the city’s Pepsi Center and making the proceedings available online to anyone around the world.

As the official Live Video and Content Delivery Services provider for the Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC), Level 3 Communications will make it possible for a global audience to join the proceedings from start to finish. Whether it’s by watching live, streaming video or by choosing recorded and edited video content from earlier Convention proceedings, visitors to the Convention’s website will be in the thick of the action.

Level 3 will offer four technological services for the DNCC:
  • Conventional broadcast video in Analog and High-Definition (HD) from the Convention floor at the Pepsi Center;
  • Live streaming video delivered via the Internet, providing coverage throughout the four-day event; (streamed in HD—a convention first)
  • Online video downloads of Convention content and other caucus meetings
  • Caching the democonvention.com website on the Level 3 Content Distribution Network (CDN)
“Over the past four years since the last presidential election, technology has changed significantly,” said Grant van Rooyen, President of Level 3 Content Markets. “The opportunity for Level 3 to bring new online streaming and caching technology to the Democratic National Convention in Denver will allow us to engage a broader global audience and capitalize on the growing demand for online access to video content and other interactive tools that provide greater content quality and place the viewer in control of when and how they watch the Convention in August.”

Level 3 has a long history of supplying broadcast services for the U.S. political landscape, including ten years of State of the Union addresses with Level 3 Vyvx Services.
