Establishing Standards for Scientific Research

ATCC develops standards for the biomaterials community

ATCC develops national consensus standards for biomaterials and related processes. In 2007, we became the first biological resource organization to be accredited by American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as a Standards Development Organization (SDO). ANSI accreditation ensures that procedures used by standards developers meet the requirements for openness, balance, consensus, and due process and that the voluntary consensus standards produced are compatible with the requirements of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

ATCC published the following consensus standards:

  • Standardization of In Vitro Assays to Determine Anthrax Toxin Activities (ASN-0001)
    • PDF (available on ANSI)
  • Authentication of Human Cell Lines: Standardization of Short Tandem Repeat (STR) Profiling (ASN-0002)
  • Species-Level Identification of Animal Cells through Mitochondrial Cytochrome C Oxidase Subunit 1 (CO1) DNA Barcodes (ASN-0003)
    • PDF (available on ANSI)

Cell Authentication

ATCC offers scientists stand-alone and customized cell authentication services to confirm the identity and purity of their research cultures. Services include human and mouse cell STR profiling and sterility, CO1, and mycoplasma testing.

Mouse Cell STR Testing

Developed by ATCC in partnership with the National Institutes for Standards and Technology (NIST) and tested by 10 independent laboratories, ATCC’s Mouse STR profiling service offers a new global standard for mouse cell line authentication.

Mycoplasma Testing

ATCC’s mycoplasma PCR-based testing service detects over 60 species of Mycoplasma, Acholeplasma, Spiroplasma, and Ureaplasma, with results in 3-5 days. It uses Whatman™ FTA™ sample collection cards with ATCC's Universal Mycoplasma Detection Kit.
